James Suckling 97 points: "An elegant, cool-climate wine with aromas of citrus leaves, kiwis, eucalyptus, leather, smoke and dark tobacco. Medium-bodied, it shows leafy flavors, soft and elegant silky tannins, crisp yet integrated acidity, a brilliant finish and a long, brooding aftertaste. Vegan. Sustainable. Drinkable now, but best from 2026." , Reviewed on 06.05.25 by James Suckling

The Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 95+ points: "The 2020 San Leonardo is a historic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Merlot born from the vision of the Guerrieri Gonzaga family and the legendary Italian enologist Giacomo Tachis, who worked on this wine from 1985 until 2002 (when current winemaker Carlo Ferrini took over). San Leonardo shares a similar blueprint as Sassicaia, and like that giant of Tuscany, this bottle really starts to strut its stuff with at least 10 years of bottle age. At this young stage, it shows tart berry flavors and some green herbal overtones. Experience teaches us that the wine starts off slow but eventually leans into polished, silky tannins and bright flavor intensity. Patience is required." The Wine Palate 95 points: "More than 1000 years ago, San Leonardo began its life as a monastery. But for the past 300 years it has been dutifully stewarded by the family of Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga. Their first commercial wine production dates to 1724, and they remain a fixture in the region of Trentino. The unique climate of their valley where San Leonardo lies benefits from the 'Ora', a warm wind off Lake Garda that moderates temperatures in this Alpine region, creating a pocket in which Bordeaux varieties thrive. The grapes for their flagship wine come from 25-75 year old vines of various training methods, with individual blocks undergoing separate fermentation and aging. After indigenous yeast fermentation and maceration 12-15 days in small concrete tanks, the wine is aged in 70% barrique, 30% used tonneaux for two years, with an additional two years of cellar aging in the bottle before release. Complex aromas of black fruit, violets, allspice, black tea, dried citrus, balsam, and peppery spices. The tannins are smooth, present, structured, and refined, highlighting balanced freshness of fruit and tertiary notes. Very long on the finish, it is a classically styled medium-full-bodied wine of serious depth." Drinking Window 2026 - 2037, Reviewed on 01.01.26 by Vanessa Conlin MW
Jancis Robinson 16.5+ points: "full bottle all of 1,415 g – i'm sad that san leonardo seem to have chosen a heavier bottle for their artist's label series. this label shows linda fregni nagler's rendition of leonardo da vinci's glass airlock which seems to be in the family's museum – though i may have misunderstood! just 999 bottles were produced with this label.already quite a mature, shaded ruby. lovely rich nose with marked acidity and only light tannins. i wonder whether there is some carmenère influence here? there's usually about 30% of this sometimes green-tasting variety but no details of this vintage have been posted on their website yet. very mellow tannins for a cabernet-based wine that's only five years old! Falstaff 91 points: "bright ruby red with nuances of purple. fragrant, seductive nose, raspberry and cherry, sage, subtle leather notes. on the palate, very elegant, silky tannins, an exciting acidity, notes of dark chocolate on the finish." , Reviewed on 16.10.23 by Othmar Kiem, Simon Staffler
The Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 90 points: "The Tenuta San Leonardo 2020 Carmenère shows a lighter appearance when compared to the previous 2019 vintage. This vintage boasts a medium-lean texture with tart plum, bitter currant and hints of spicy white peppercorn. You also get some leafy greenness. This historic estate in Italy's Trentino region has embraced Carmenère as an important element in its prestigious portfolio, and it's one of only a handful to do so. Hopefully, this bottle will flesh out with more cellar age. This is a release of 7,100 numbered bottles." Drinking Window 2027 - 2030, Reviewed on 11.12.25 by Monica Larner
Vinous 90 points: "Darkly floral and earthy in the best possible way, the 2020 Terre di San Leonardo wafts up with savory herbal tones, pepper-tinged wild berries and wet stone aromas. It sweeps across the palate with a wave of tart wild berry fruits lifted by brisk acidity. Saline minerals saturate toward the close. This leaves green olive notes and savory spices lingering. The finish is remarkably fresh." Drinking Window 2024 - 2026, Reviewed on 27.03.24 by Eric Guido
